HOW TO BUILD FIRE SAFETY INTO EVERY PROJECT

Time to save lives

Our Tektalan A2 SmartTec board combined with Rock Mineral Wool, for example, has an A2 classification which means it is fire safe with a fire resistance of 180 minutes. This gives people time to leave a burning building, firefighters more time to contain the fire and provides greater building resilience after the blaze has been extinguished.

 

In addition to exceptional fire resistance, Tektalan A2 SmartTec does not melt in a fire which means there are no dangerous burning droplets and hardly any smoke created during combustion — a significant factor considering most fire fatalities are caused by smoke inhalation.

 

It is these qualities, along with high acoustic and thermal performance, that have made Heraklith Wood Wool products such as Tektalan particularly popular with public buildings — from schools, restaurants, hospitals, offices, hotels and retail outlets to major public construction projects such as football stadiums, entertainment centres and theatres.

Today hundreds of major underground projects such as car parks, tunnels and metro lines have also found the application of Heraklith Wood Wool particularly effective when it comes to fire safety in public spaces that serve millions.

 

For example, we have installed Tektalan A2 in the new 176 km US$22.5 billion Riyadh metro system in Saudi Arabia which will carry 3.6 million passengers daily and Tektalan A2 has also been installed in the high volume new North-South metro line in Amsterdam.

 

Regulation also recognises the importance of making public areas such as these as safe as possible to avoid the spread of fire to other buildings and safeguarding the structural integrity of construction works.

 

The intense heat of a blaze not only causes extensive damage underground but can also impact the bearing of other buildings threatening the safety of those inside.

For example, Approved Document B (Wales) states that car parks that are not open sided require a fire resistance of between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the depth of the lowest basement and the height of the floor above ground. Solutions such as Tektalan A2 SmartTec deliver the results regulation requires.
