Sound insulation with wood wool boards

Our senses are continuously stimulated by sounds. Desired but also unwanted noises affect the quality of our lives. Nuisance due to a lack of sound insulation can even cause health problems. Think of complaints such as sleep deprivation, stress, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, in addition to good acoustics, you are looking for the best sound insulation for an optimal living and working environment.

How does sound insulation work?

The purpose of sound insulation, or in terms of wood wool actually sound absorption, is to reduce or prevent the amount of (annoying) reverberating noise.  To safeguard the health of residents or employees of a building, you want of course to apply the best sound absorption.

Sound absorption and sound insulation

The terms  sound insulation and sound absorption are being mixed up quite often.

We speak about sound insulation when stopping sounds going from one space to another.

Sound absorption on the other hand is about muting sounds in spaces with too much resonance or when annoying sound reduces the ability to hear spoken word.

Sound absorption material

You can improve the acoustics of a space by using wood wool boards. When combining wood wool with sound absorbing material such as rock mineral wool, you choose with our Heraklith Tektalan A2 board for the best possible sound absorption.

By using insulation boards based on wood wool for ceilings and walls you can reduce the amount of resonance to a comfortable level. For that reason you find our Heraklith insulation boards in theatres, cinemas, restaurants and parking garages all over the world.

Sound nuisance is being prevented by the use of wood wool boards.

The best sound insulation

Sound absorbing insulation is being communicated in terms of sound absorption coefficients; such as the alpha-value (αw).

Within the value of 0 to 1 the ratio between absorbed sound and incoming sound is displayed. A value of 1 means that there is 100% sound absorption. 0 indicates that no sound is being absorbed at all. In that case the sound is thus completely reflected. In other words: at a higher value, you enjoy the best sound absorption.

In addition to the αw, sound absorption is also reflected in NRC Values. This stands for Reverberation Reduction Coefficient. Finally, there is the SAA. This is the one-digit value for the sound absorption according to ASTM C 423, based on the absorption coefficient in the third bands of 200 Hz up to and including 2500 Hz.
